Directions

The fastest means of public transportation in Berlin are S-Bahn (inner city trains, symbol: white "S" on green background) and U-Bahn (subway, symbol: white "U" on blue background). A network map of these can be found under S+U-Bahn_aktuell.pdf. Besides there exist also buses and tramways. All of these, also in combination, can be used with a single ticket. Berlin and surroundings are divided into concentric fare zones "A", "B", and "C", where "A" and "B" cover the whole city of Berlin, and "C" contains destinations outside the Berlin city limits. Tickets are sold in the three variants "AB", "BC", and "ABC". For most of your purposes "AB" will be the ticket of choice (single ride EUR 2.10). Note, however, that Schönefeld Airport is located in zone "C". For traveling from there to the conference site a ticket "BC" should be purchased (EUR 2.50). (Travelling from there to a hotel situated in zone "A" requires a ticket "ABC" for EUR 2.80.) A day ticket AB costs EUR 6.10 (EUR 6.50 for ABC). Before buying a ticket for several days please be reminded that a ticket for the duration of the conference is included in the conference fee, and will be handed to you at the on-site registration counter. Tickets bought from a vending machine or a counter need to be validated with a time stamp upon commencing your travel. Please use the stamp machines in the stations or in the busses. Tickets bought from the bus driver have already time and place printed on it.

Below we suggest some routes by public transportation for reaching the ICMFS conference site from airports, railway station, and the hotels. Note that the descriptions given on this page are just suggestions on how to proceed, using a relatively easy connection. Often there is more than one way to go, and other variants may be faster at certain times. You may also use the information system of the BVG under http://www.fahrinfo-berlin.de/Fahrinfo/bin/query.bin/en to find your way.

(July 17th, 2009) Attention! Due to ongoing technical checks and replacements of wheels of S-Bahn trains the S-Bahn service in Berlin operates at a reduced service in the moment. Modified schedules have been taken into account in the descriptions given below, but service may change on a day-to-day basis. Try to avoid S-Bahn connections by using U-Bahn, whenever possible.

Directions how to reach the conference site from airports and railway station:


1) Berlin Main Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof) to ICMFS Conference Site:

Take a train (Regionalexpress, RE) from the upper level (Gleis 13 or 14) to "Berlin Zoologischer Garten" (4 min.). Change there to the subway line U9 and take a train in the direction to "Rathaus Steglitz". Get off at "Spichernstraße" (3 min.) and take subway line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at "Thielplatz" (13 min.). From there it is a 3 min. walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (see sketch below). Total travel time: about 30-40 min.


2) Berlin Tegel International Airport (TXL) to ICMFS Conference Site:

Take bus no. X9 or 109. Get off at "Jakob-Kaiser-Platz" (4 min.). Take subway line U7 in the direction to "Rudow". Get off at "Fehrbelliner Platz" (11 min.) and take subway line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at "Thielplatz" (10 min.). From there it is a 3 min. walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (see sketch below). Total travel time: about 40-50 min.


3) Berlin Schönefeld International Airport (SXF) to ICMFS Conference Site:

Alternative 1:
Take the express bus SXF1 with direct service to Bahnhof Südkreuz (20 min.). From there, take S-Bahn line S41 ("Ring clockwise") until "Heidelberger Platz" (7 min.). Change there to the subway and take line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at "Thielplatz" (8 min.). From there it is a 3 min. walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (see sketch below). Total travel time: about 45-70 min.

Alternative 2:
Directly outside the terminal take bus X7 to "U Rudow" (8 min.). Change there to the subway (line U7 to "Rathaus Spandau"). Exit at "Fehrbelliner Platz" (34 min.) and take subway line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at "Thielplatz" (10 min.). From there it is a 5 min. walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (see sketch below). Total travel time: about 60-80 min.

Alternative 3:
Exit the terminal and walk to the railway station (5-7 min.) Take S-Bahn S9 until "Berlin Schöneweide" (14 min.) and wait on the same platform for a train of line S46. Get off at "Hermannstraße" (10 min.) and wait at the same track for another train (S41 "Ring clockwise") to continue travel until "Heidelberger Platz" (13 min.). Change there to the subway and take line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at "Thielplatz" (8 min.). From there it is a 3 min. walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (see sketch below). Total travel time: about 70-80 min.
(From Monday, July 20th, the S-Bahn line S9 will be replaced by buses that leave from the terminal at 4, 24, 44 minutes after the full hour and go to "Berlin Schöneweide". From there continue like above.)

Directions how to reach the conference site from the hotels:


a) From Seminaris CampusHotel Berlin to ICMFS:

Alternative 1: Walking (about 15 min.)
Alternative 2: Go to the subway station "Dahlem Dorf" (5 min.) and take a train in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at the next stop ("Thielplatz", 1 min.) and walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (3 min., see sketch below). Total travel time: 10-15 min.


b) From Excelsior Hotel to ICMFS:

Go to the railway and subway station "Zoologischer Garten" (5 min.) Descend to the subway, take line U9 in the direction to "Rathaus Steglitz". Get off at "Spichernstraße" (3 min.) and take subway line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at "Thielplatz" (13 min.) and walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (3 min., see sketch below). Total travel time: 25-30 min.


c) From Ravenna Hotel to ICMFS:

Take the bus from the bus stop outside the hotel (50 m to the right, line X83 towards "U Dahlem Dorf" or "Königin-Luise-Straße/Clayallee"). Get off at "U Dahlem Dorf" (5 min.). Take the subway line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at the next stop ("Thielplatz", 1 min.) and walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (3 min., see sketch below). Total travel time: 15-20 min.


d) From Ellington Hotel Berlin to ICMFS:

Go to the subway station "Augsburger Straße" (2 min.) and take line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at "Thielplatz" (15 min.) and walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (3 min., see sketch below). Total travel time: 20-25 min.


e) From Hollywood Media Hotel to ICMFS:

Go to the subway station "Uhlandstraße" (5 min.) and take line U1 in the direction to "Warschauer Straße". Get off at "Wittenbergplatz" (2 min.), and change to line U3 in the direction to "Krumme Lanke". Get off at "Thielplatz" (16 min.) and walk to the Henry-Ford-Bau (3 min., see sketch below). Total travel time: 30-35 min.
